Master thesis, 30 HP: Detection of small and slow object in presence of strong clutter

Göteborg,
Sweden
Closing date: 29 November 2025

Develop an algorithm for detection of small and slow object in present of strong reflections from ground and sea.

Background

We recognize the immense value that students bring to our company. Your academic rigor, combined with your enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology, allows you to approach problems with a unique and insightful lens. At Saab, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, gaining invaluable practical experience while making a tangible contribution to our growth and development.

Airborne radar systems are used for surveillance of air, land and sea targets over vast aeras. By mounting the radar on an aircraft, the horizon is pushed outwards which increases the effective range to hundreds of kilometers. A major challenge in airborne radar applications is to distinguish between small, slow and low moving targets (e. g. a drone) from the radar return of the ground or sea. Here, digital signal processing is a crucial part of the radar design.

In the thesis work, different target detection algorithms are implemented (in e. g. Matlab). The algorithms are subsequently tested on real radar-signals and evaluated with respect to detection performance and computational load.

Your profile

The work is suitable for one or two master students with interests in signal processing and/or linear algebra.

The project is suitable for the highly motivated student with a strong mathematical drive. Proficiency in at least one programming language suitable for algorithm development (for instance MATLAB, Python, etc …) is required.

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
