Master Thesis, 30 HP: Interface Roadmaps in a Model Based Reference Architecture

Solna or Göteborg,
Sweden
Closing date: 1 November 2026

Are you a student eager to apply your theoretical knowledge and fresh perspectives to real-world challenges? At Saab, we believe that innovation thrives on new ideas, and your master thesis project could be the spark that ignites our next technological breakthrough.

Your role

We recognize the immense value that students bring to our company. Your academic rigor, combined with your enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology, allows you to approach problems with a unique and insightful lens. At Saab, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, gaining invaluable practical experience while making a tangible contribution to our growth and development.

Background
Saab Surveillance is deploying a common model-based reference architecture for radar and C2 systems, using SysML in Enterprise Architect and a shared Surveillance Reference Architecture Framework. Stable, generic logical interfaces between system elements are central for modularity, platform reuse and supplier decoupling.

Today, the evolution of these interfaces over time is only partially captured. There is a need for systematic “interface roadmaps” that show how key interfaces evolve across products and generations, and how this impacts portfolios and platforms such as Saab Digital Sensor Core.

Description of the Thesis Project
The aim of the project is to develop and demonstrate a method for defining, modelling and analyzing interface roadmaps in a SysML based reference architecture, and to explore how these roadmaps can guide product and platform evolution across multiple systems and product families.

The assignment consists of the following steps:

  • Perform a literature review on interface evolution, interface contracts and product line architectures in complex software intensive and cyber physical systems.
  • Interview key stakeholders (architects, platform owners, product managers) to identify the most important generic logical interfaces in the Surveillance portfolio and their current evolution pain points.
  • Propose a method and metamodel for “interface roadmaps” linked to the Surveillance 4+1 views (especially Logical, Implementation and Deployment) and the Reference Architecture Roadmap (RAR).
  • Apply the method to 1–2 concrete interfaces (e.g. Sensor Control, Target Tracking, Recording, or a SDSC platform interface), modelling their as is and to be evolution over a 3–5 year horizon.
  • Analyze how different interface roadmap choices affect modularity, reuse and integration effort across products and platforms.• Optionally, prototype simple tool support (e.g. in EA, Python or a lightweight web/visualization tool) to visualize and maintain interface roadmaps.

You will perform the work at the System, Architecture and Technology department at Saab Surveillance. The thesiswork can be carried out either in Göteborg or Solna.

Your profile

The project is suitable for 2 students with an interest in system and software architecture, model-based systems engineering, and product line/platform development.

You are in the final stage of Engineering Design, Engineering Physics, Mechatronics  or equivalent and are about to begin a 30 hp thesis project.

We provide the support and guidance you need to translate your theoretical knowledge into practical solutions. Join us and become a driving force behind Saab's technological advancements!

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
