Linköping,
Sweden
Closing date: 30 October 2025

Are you a student eager to apply your theoretical knowledge and fresh perspectives to real-world challenges? At Saab, we believe that innovation thrives on new ideas, and your master thesis project could be the spark that ignites our next technological breakthrough.

Your role

We recognise the immense value that students bring to our company. Your academic rigor, combined with your enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology, allows you to approach problems with a unique and insightful lens. At Saab, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, gaining invaluable practical experience while making a tangible contribution to our growth and development.

Background

The flow in an intake upstream of the compressor should optimally be uniform. However, the flow is generally non-uniform and some flight conditions cause higher levels of non-uniform flow. The pressure distribution immediately upstream of the compressor may in such cases be highly unevenly distributed, this is also known as intake distortion. Distortion affects engine performance and increases the risk of compressor stall. Hence, it is essential to predict the distortion within the entire operational envelope of the engine in order to assess the risk of compressor stall. Steady-state distortion can be predicted with steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations; however, the time fluctuating distortion in highly turbulent flow can be far greater than indicated by a steady-state simulation. Dynamic intake distortion can be determined through wind tunnel tests and/or time-accurate CFD simulations.  However, these options are both highly expensive and time consuming. A faster and less expensive method to estimate dynamic intake distortion is warranted, especially for conceptual studies. One such method is to utilise steady-state CFD pressure data together with an estimated fluctuating pressure component to form a synthesised dynamic pressure from which the dynamic distortion can be determined.

Project description

The thesis project aims to explore methodology for estimation of dynamic intake distortion synthesis for conceptual studies. It includes theoretical studies and literature survey, practical implementation of theory and evaluation of the methodology. Wind tunnel data of an intake design are available for validation and verification. CFD simulations matching the wind tunnel conditions will be performed within the project. The relationship between steady-state CFD turbulence quantities and measured quantities is not obvious. Can the traditional method be enhanced? Perhaps through an enhanced mathematical model or with the help of machine learning. We encourage you, bases on your skills, to find the best solution.

The Master thesis will be performed at the Propulsion System department at Saab Aeronautics. The department is responsible for air intake design in our military fighters. You will receive support from supervisors with extensive experience in the field, ensuring you have the best conditions for success.
