Background
The development of advanced submarine systems is a complex product development process including everything from requirements management and concept development to design, verification, documentation, and maintenance. The process involves a large number of stakeholders, extensive technical information, and requirements for quality, traceability, and efficiency.
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, and agentic AI in particular, creates new opportunities to support engineers in their daily work. AI agents have the potential to automate repetitive tasks, analyze large volumes of information, support decision-making, and streamline information management throughout the product development process.
To fully realize these opportunities it is necessary to understand which activities are best suited for AI support, and how the technology can be implemented in a secure and value-creating manner.
Description of the Thesis Project
The purpose of this thesis is to identify where in a selected part of the product development process agentic AI can be implemented to create the greatest possible value for the organization.
The project includes, in a first step, mapping this part of the product development process and analyzing various activities from an AI perspective. The focus is on identifying tasks where AI agents can contribute by improving information management, automating repetitive activities, enhancing decision support, or increasing the quality of development work. The study will also examine the consequences of errors and the evidence required before AI-generated outputs can be accepted.
In a second step, one of these tasks will be selected and an agentic AI prototype will be developed, implemented, verified and validated. Using a real case study will give a better understanding of the potential and limitations of agentic AI implementation.
The result of the master’s thesis will be a map of the chosen product development process, a tested agentic AI demonstrator, and a clear list of what needs to be in place before AI agents are used more widely.
The thesis will be conducted in close collaboration between Saab, Detailed Design, and Lund University Faculty of Engineering (LTH).
The work will be supervised by experienced engineers from the organization and carried out with support from Guest Professor Ibtissam El Hassani, whose research focuses on how artificial intelligence can be used to improve product development and industrial processes.
Your Profile
This thesis project is suitable for two students with an interest in product development, digitalization, and artificial intelligence. You are in the final stage of your Master of Science in Engineering studies, for example Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering Physics, Industrial Engineering and Management, Systems Engineering, or a related field, and are about to begin your 30 hp master's thesis.
We are looking for analytical, curious individuals who are interested in how future AI solutions can be integrated into advanced engineering organizations. Knowledge of AI, machine learning, software development, systems engineering, or product development processes is considered a merit but is not required.
