The role

As part of our Civil group, the Project Engineering Manager - ATM will support the Air Traffic Management (ATM) programme as required in the tender, planning and implementation phases of Saab’s Air Traffic Management projects.

The Project Engineering Manager - ATM will ensure the delivery of all engineering outcomes for assigned projects within the Air Traffic Management Programme, working in close collaboration with the responsible Project Manager and the Program Engineering Manager – ATM to ensure project success.

The role will carry comprehensive responsibility for leading and managing a multi-disciplinary engineering team to deliver complex ATM system projects through application of systems engineering process and rigour. This role involves technical leadership, ensuring that projects are executed to the highest standards, aligned with organisational Engineering Policy and Systems Engineering principles, guidelines, practices and objectives.

Responsible for promoting a culture of continuous improvement, and ensuring the successful delivery of technical solutions that meet the project’s operational requirements, this role requires effective resource management and stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to navigate complex technical challenges to achieve project success.

Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Develop and maintain the project Systems Engineering Management Plan.
  • Manage the resource plan for ATM project engineering resources, working within project budgetary and planning constraints to deliver engineering outcomes. Ensure that all ATM project engineering resources have appropriate competence and experience to successfully deliver project engineering outcomes.
  • Ensure successful ATM engineering outcomes through regular and effective liaison with the customer throughout the project, managing and escalating scope, resource and schedule risks as appropriate.
  • Manage all project technical issues and risks, and control project technical scope through close collaboration with the customer and the Project Manager.
  • Establish and maintain baselines defined in the SEMP and ensure appropriate control of baseline configuration in accordance with the relevant ATM Programme Configuration Management Plan
  • Other relevant accountabilities for PEM as related to Saab Australia’s Delegation of Authority (000AAT206).
  • Comply with legislation and company policies, processes and instructions, including those relating to non-discrimination, safety, duty of care and the quality management system.

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office and a 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.

About you

Your education, skills and experience will include:

  • Degree in engineering/computer science with suitable recent experience.
  • Significant experience in the application of systems engineering principles in ATM domain projects, in particular relating to design, implementation and support of ATM systems.
  • Ability to navigate complex technical challenges while ensuring that solutions are innovative and aligned with strategic goals in relation to the development of in-country ATM capability.
  • Proficient knowledge of ATM systems and their integration.
  • Demonstrated awareness and ability to address whole of capability/systems issues, such as operational safety, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), Human Factors and supportability.
  • Competent knowledge of security in the context of the application of the Australian government’s Information Security Manual (ISM).
  • Understand complex technical issues and manage them within project cost, time and quality constraints.
  • Operational or engineering experience in the Air Traffic Management domain is highly desirable
  • Eligible for chartered engineering status and state engineering registration (Queensland/Victoria).


As a defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants will be required to hold an Australian Defence Security Clearance preferably to baseline level or have the ability to gain one.
