PROJECT MANAGER - HARDWARE

The role

The Project Manager (Hardware) provides leadership of a complex projects (or a programme) involving multiple internal as well as external stakeholders. Your role will include the day-to-day management of the assigned Projects and sub-contractors. The successful candidate would be responsible for the outcomes of the hardware delivery team, including cost/margin, schedule, scope, quality, customer satisfaction for all hardware scope and any other project objectives as defined in the Contract/Project Directive.

Further, the successful candidate will:

Reporting to the Product Manager - Hardware the Project Manager (Hardware) will be accountable for:

  • Creation, management, and ownership of hardware related scope of works, including tracking and reporting of time, cost/margin and quality outcomes and risk related to assigned hardware projects or project cost accounts
  • Preparation, monitoring and revision of project plans, estimates, cost accounts and schedules to meet the objectives set by the applicable tasking statement or other contractual obligations
  • Continual improvement of project approaches to achieve required outcomes, including identification of opportunities in order to maximise outcomes and/or improve efficiencies
  • Preparation, monitoring and revision of project plans, estimates, cost accounts and schedules to meet the objectives set by the applicable tasking statement or other contractual obligations
  • Preparation and/or presenting of project status at Steering Committee Meetings, Gate Reviews, Customer Reviews and Progress Meetings as required
  • Internal stakeholder management with contract variations and scope changes
  • Development and maintenance of good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintaining validity of the hardware resource data for assigned projects that reflects the number and types of resources required to complete the approved project in the timeframe to support the overall hardware team resource planning and recruitment strategy
  • Development and maintenance of a master hardware schedule to capture all active and potential work to determine shortfalls in resources and/or skills to complete the assigned work
  • Work closely with resource owners (team leads) within the Hardware group to ensure full utilisation of team members is achieved
  • Support the Hardware Engineering Group to ensure plans are in place for delivery of all parts, assemblies, tools and equipment and/or available in the required time to ensure seamless manufacture  
  • Comply with legislation and Company policies, processes and instructions, including those relating to non-discrimination, safety and duty of care and the quality management system
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office, 9 day fortnight and part time will be considered for this role.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Understanding best practice Project Management in a multi-disciplinary business
  • Experience with managing multiple internal stakeholders
  • Knowledge and/or experience of System Engineering practices and product requirements management  
  • Experience in managing Hardware product design, development and low volume high value manufacturing projects
  • Broad understanding of Software development practices to ensure schedule and outcome alignment with Hardware development process
  • Ability to effectively manage competing priorities in a dynamic resource constrained environment
  • Experience in Earned Value Management (EVM)
  • Proficient with the use of Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Project, Visio etc.
  • Experience with short-, medium- and long-term resource and skills planning
  • 5 years minimum Project Management experience in a similar domain is essential
  • Demonstrable experience in managing and delivering Hardware related projects is essential
  • Tertiary qualifications in Business/Project Management is desirable
  • Membership of AIPM or PMI is desirable


As a defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants will be required to hold an Australian Citizenship and Australian Defence Security Clearance NV1 or NV2 level. Information including past and present nationality and citizenship may be requested to check eligibility for access to materials controlled under various export control regimes, including ITAR.
