Master Thesis, 30 hp: Sensor fusion for robust orientation estimation

Are you a student eager to apply your theoretical knowledge and fresh perspectives to real-world challenges? At Saab, we believe that innovation thrives on new ideas, and your master thesis project could be the spark that ignites our next technological breakthrough.

Your role

We recognize the immense value that students bring to our company. Your academic rigor, combined with your enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology, allows you to approach problems with a unique and insightful lens. At Saab, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, gaining invaluable practical experience while making a tangible contribution to our growth and development.

Background
Saab AB, Training and Simulation, develops realistic training systems ranging from individual soldier training to large-scale exercises involving vehicles and complete military units. Many applications require reliable orientation information under varying operating conditions where no single sensor technology is sufficient.

Inertial sensors can provide high-rate orientation estimates but are subject to drift and accumulated errors over time. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), on the other hand, can provide absolute position and heading information but may be limited by signal availability, environmental conditions and measurement uncertainty. Combining complementary sensor technologies therefore offers the potential to achieve more accurate, robust and reliable orientation estimation under varying operating conditions.

Description of the Thesis Project
This master thesis will investigate methods for estimating orientation through sensor fusion. The objective is to explore how information from multiple different sensor technologies can be combined to provide reliable and accurate orientation estimates under varying conditions.

The exact scope is intentionally open and will be defined together with the student. Possible areas of investigation include sensor characterization, state estimation, uncertainty modelling, filtering techniques, and evaluation of different fusion architectures. One potential direction is the fusion of IMU and GNSS-based measurements to estimate true orientation and provide an absolute reference frame.

The work may include:

  • Literature review of orientation estimation and sensor fusion methods
  • Mathematical modelling and state estimation
  • Development and evaluation of fusion algorithms
  • Simulation and/or experimental validation
  • Analysis of accuracy, robustness and limitations
  • Recommendations for future system development

Your profile

The project is suitable for 1 student interested in navigation, sensor fusion and state estimation. You are in your final stage of Engineering Physics or equivalent and are about to begin a 30 hp thesis project. Experience with MATLAB, Python, Simulink or similar tools is considered an advantage.

We provide the support and guidance you need to translate your theoretical knowledge into practical solutions. Join us and become a driving force behind Saab's technological advancements!

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
