Curious about the ‘why’? Broaden your horizons and intern at Saab

5 min read

Each summer, our paid internship program gives students in their penultimate year of undergraduate study the opportunity get hands-on experience alongside industry leaders across our diverse project teams.

Hear from a few of this summer’s interns below:

Meet Jasper – Undergraduate Market Analyst in Land and Aerospace

PROJECT: Market analysis and opportunities for air-defence solutions

I have always had a passion for science and technology, so wanting to knowing how things work on a fundamental level and learning of emerging technologies have always been interesting to me. Initially, I wanted to work in the IT industry but I found I enjoyed analytics and once I started down the path of business strategy I found I really liked learning the ‘why’ behind things.

During my internship at Saab, I’ve been researching industry competitors, analysing their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. Using this research, I compare the differentiating factors of our competitors to what Saab offers. This provides a really interesting insight into the landscape that Saab is operating in and helps form business strategy.

It’s been a great experience so far; I really feel like no question is the wrong question and I‘ve learnt so much already.

This information is then put through a business intelligence software, which helps to display the data in a way that’s easily conveyed and configurable based on what we want to discuss. I haven’t used a tool like this before, so it’s been really useful to get hands-on experience with software that helps to convey a clear message based on my research. This is particularly useful for presentations where you can change the configuration to best explain the current market environment.

Meet Claire – Undergraduate Logistics Engineer in Maritime

PROJECT: Logistics engineering for the Royal Australian Navy’s Hobart Class destroyers

Interning at Saab has really cleared up a lot of questions I had about a career in engineering. At university, I was unsure about what direction to take with my career and where my interests and strengths existed. Without first-hand experience it can be really difficult to know if something is right for you, but an internship provides just that!

During this experience, I developed a love for some unexpected aspects of engineering. Since my placement is with the Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) team, I’ve been able to take a deep-dive into the fundamentals of an engineering discipline that I was unfamiliar with. Maybe it’s the real-world impact of working on a project for Australia’s Navy or having the opportunity to learn new engineering methods. Either way, I’m really enjoying a side of engineering that I knew very little about before being at Saab.

One thing I’m finding super useful is that we’re paired with a graduate engineer to provide mentoring. It just made the whole experience very supportive because I can ask them anything! Plus, I’ve been able to join some of the social events amongst the graduate cohort which adds a bit of fun, but more importantly broadens my connections and support network.

Naturally, I was a bit nervous going into the experience because I knew that working in the office would be quite different from the spontaneous university lifestyle I’ve gotten used to, but I’ve found that this routine means I know what to expect each day and it’s much easier to work collaboratively with my team.

Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) engineering works on full life-cycle of a product or program, focusing on increasing the functional life-cycle while decreasing the life-cycle cost through minimising the demand on logistic and maintenance support. At the core or ILS engineering focuses on reliability, maintainability and testability from deployment through to end-of-life.

Meet Harvey – Undergraduate Field Application Engineer in Civil

PROJECT: Data analysis for Saab’s OneView security solution

As a kid, I always liked Lego and that stuck as I grew older. I was always building and taking things apart to see how they worked. Engineering is the perfect career for this, so I’m excited about being able to work on innovative technologies at places like Saab.

I’ve been working in Saab’s Civil group, where I’ve been focused on real-time data analysis for the OneView security management system. Learning about the software behind the OneView solution has been really interesting! Essentially, the software I’m working on records a log of what’s happening inside the system and then my job is to build an application which takes this data and dynamically displays it. This then allows the team to quickly diagnose and solve problems that improve the system.

This program has been a great experience so far and has given me a valuable insight and exposure to the defence and security industries.

This project is all about research, coding and building the application after spending time to design the user interface so that it best suits the team’s needs. The internship isn’t all technical skills though, I’ve had to reach out to team members and learn through workshopping to find out what configuration would work best for them. This means I’ve have the opportunity to enhance my communication and presentation skills, all while meeting people who can provide some really invaluable engineering and professional advice.

This program has been a great experience so far and has given me a valuable insight and exposure to the defence and security industries.

OneView is a platform, commonly used for security applications, that provides a common and consistent user interface across a larger number of disparate subsystems; whether they be access control, surveillance, building management or specialised customer applications.
