Gripen in operation

The first four operational Gripen aircraft were incorporated into the Brazilian Air Force in December 2022. A ceremony held at Anápolis Air Force Base (BAAN) marked the beginning of operational activities by the First Air Defense Group (1st GDA).

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) held a ceremony on 19 December 2022 at the Anápolis Air Base (BAAN) marking the commencement of operational activities for the Gripen E fighter aircraft (known as Gripen F-39 in Brazil) under the First Air Defense Group (1st GDA). This milestone represents the culmination of years of collaborative effort between Brazil and Sweden. Following a successful flight test phase at the Gripen Flight Test Center (GFTC), the Gripen E was certified for military use, demonstrating compliance with airworthiness and flight safety requirements outlined by both Swedish and Brazilian military authorities.

To support pilot training, two advanced Gripen E Mission Trainers were installed at Anápolis Air Force Base (BAAN) at the end of 2022. A key feature of these simulators are the two interconnected cockpits, which allow pilots to train in formation with multiple aircraft flying close to each other at the same heading and speed. The high degree of technological sophistication and realism provides a realistic training environment, preparing the Brazilian officers to experience and navigate challenging scenarios, thus enhancing the readiness of the Air Force.
