Saab Celebrates the U.S. Navy’s 250th Birthday while Charting the Future
As the Navy marks a historic milestone, Saab proudly celebrates a decades-long partnership while looking to the horizon of providing platforms, sensors, weapons and autonomous maritime technologies.
Over the past 250 years, the U.S. Navy has grown from just six frigates purchased by Congress during the Revolutionary War to the most advanced and lethal maritime fighting force the world has ever seen.
Saab has been honored to stand alongside the Navy for two decades, providing cutting-edge technologies that have safeguarded Sailors at home and abroad. From 3D surveillance radars to advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) training systems, Saab’s partnership with the Navy continues to evolve to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow, advancing the Navy’s ongoing mission to defend freedom, preserve economic prosperity and keep the seas open and free.
The company’s partnership with the Navy began in 2005, when it delivered the Sea Giraffe 3-D multi-mission radar system to the USS Independence. Today, Saab’s SPS-77 is installed on every Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship for the Navy.
“Our partnership with the U.S. Navy is the cornerstone of Saab, Inc.’s strategy to contribute combat capabilities to our nation’s military. We seek to provide systems and platforms that fill critical requirement gaps and to provide full support throughout the lifecycle of these programs,” said Tom Disy, a business development director at Saab, Inc.
Supporting Naval Dominance from Coast to Coast
Saab's teams across the United States are supporting U.S. Naval dominance through innovative technologies across multiple domains:
- In Syracuse, New York, Saab’s center of radar excellence supports radars on several classes of Navy and Coast Guard ships. Those radars include the SPS-77 and SPN-50, as well as other products supporting the Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS).
- In Cranston, Rhode Island and Quincy, Massachusetts, Saab is producing approximately 10,000 MK39 Expendable Mobile Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Training Targets (EMATT) over the next decade. Saab is also providing AUV-62-AT services for the ASW training community. The AUV-62-AT is the basis for the future MK 66 HUTT ASW training platform in the U.S. Navy.
- In San Diego, California, tech incubator Skapa by Saab recently partnered with Saab’s team in Sweden to modify the CB90 system, creating the Enforcer 3 – a fully autonomous, multi-mission research vessel. This innovation enables cross-continental research and development, including the Autonomous Ocean Core, a vessel-agnostic, ready-to-use autonomous control system.
“I had the privilege of serving in the U.S. Navy for over 26 years,” said Michael Brasseur, Saab, Inc.’s Chief Strategy Officer and General Manager of Skapa. “At Saab, it’s incredible to continue to work hand in hand with the Navy – not just to react to changing technologies and challenges – but to take the lead on shaping the future with some of the smartest minds in the nation, all dedicated to keeping people and society safe.”
Looking Ahead
Through ongoing investments in cutting-edge research and development, domestic production and manufacturing, and expert customer support, Saab remains committed to standing alongside the U.S. Navy as a trusted partner in its mission to protect and serve.
