Cumbria Police Adopt Saab’s Next Generation Policing Solution

Saab has signed a contract to provide Cumbria Constabulary with their next generation SAFE command, control and communication system. The unified solution will replace several of Cumbria Constabulary’s legacy control room systems with a single modern software application.

SAFE (the command, control and communication system) is a true end-to-end solution for operational policing and will be used throughout Cumbria to manage all incidents reported by the public via 999/101 calls, email and webchat, through to intelligent resource management and officer dispatch using Airwave and the Emergency Services Network (ESN) radio communications. Officers in the field will be able to access and update incident details as well as capture and share information via their SAFE mobile app.

“SAFE will reduce IT complexity for Cumbria Constabulary and through configurable workflows and integration enable its users to make better informed decisions faster. As a result, SAFE will reduce cost, increase operational efficiency and enable the force to provide a better service to the public. Saab has a long history of working with emergency services and we are proud to once again see the innovations and capabilities of SAFE being put to use in the UK,” says Jessica Öberg, head of business area Industrial Products and Services, Saab.

“Cumbria Constabulary are excited to be working with Saab on the delivery of the SAFE system which will deliver leading-edge policing. The numerous existing systems that once served Cumbria well have limited development opportunities and this new technology will bring many public benefits. SAFE will provide superior live-time reporting which allows for resources to be deployed effectively and increases visibility, which I know is something that the public want. The introduction of SAFE is something I am very keen to see implemented and I am looking forward to seeing this come to fruition next year,” says Peter McCall, Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

Saab has around 300 UK staff located across five offices. Saab UK’s public safety team will deliver the solution throughout 2018 ready for the introduction of the Government’s new ESN. Integration with the ESN is being implemented by Saab’s software development team based in Hull’s Centre for Digital Innovation (C4DI).

Cumbria Constabulary is the fourth UK police force to make the step-change from their multiple previous generation systems to Saab’s modern unified solution. SAFE has been developed in partnership with the emergency services and is operational in the control rooms of over 30 organisations across the UK, Europe and the US.
