Saab engages for social sustainability in Bergsjön, Gothenburg

3 min read

Bergsjön “The Mountain Lake” named after the lake with the same name, is a Gothenburg suburb with over 16,000 inhabitants with over 140 nationalities represented. A diverse community with good opportunities for growth and development, but also a district that is on the local police authority’s list of “particularly vulnerable areas”. A district that needs engagement and support for the future.

Therefore Saab is in a collaboration with Framtidenkoncernen, Fastighets AB Balder and Business Region Gothenburg for sustainable development in Bergsjön, Gothenburg.

The project aims to contribute to societal goals and support initiatives to help residents to better inclusion in their community and a more prosperous future. Saab, together with the partners, are now setting a plan for how to contribute in the best way.

"No one should feel unsafe in their own community. Together with our partners and the residents in Bergsjön, we want to contribute to positive development and create good conditions for young people to get along in school and increase their possibilities of getting employed"

Saab has prioritised a number of sustainability issues that are integrated in our business strategy and our commitment serves as the basis for our long-term development and growth. Our contribution within social development mainly consists of activities to promote education and an interest in technology among children and young people, for example our cooperation with the Hummingbird cultural network in São Paulo, Brazil, our After school activites together with Project Playground and “Subs in schools technology challenge” in Australia, or Saab’s Technical School in Arboga, Sweden where Saab personnel work as teachers, mentors and training administrators.

- This partnership illustrates an important way to make our mission “Keeping people and society safe” a reality. Therefore it is crucial for our long-term focus to be part of co-creating sustainable social development, says Eva Axelsson, Head of Group Sustainability, Saab.

Our sustainability strategy is part of our business strategy and consequently part of how we want to deliver value to society and our shareholders.

Saab's participation is part of a larger commitment initiated by Framtidenkoncernen for social sustainability in some of Gothenburg's most vulnerable areas where both the private and the public sector work together to contribute and improve the conditions.

- Our new handshake for Bergsjön, together with Saab and Fastighets AB Balder, means that we now have organised co-operation with the industry in half of the city's six particularly vulnerable areas. The strong interest from leading private actors to be involved in the city's development makes me convinced that the work will continue to expand, says Terje Johansson, president and CEO, Framtidskoncernen.
