Saab Partners in MARTE Initiative to Advance Europe's Next-Gen Main Battle Tank

2 min read

Saab is one of the partners contributing to the MARTE (Main ARmoured Tank of Europe) project, a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing Europe's technological autonomy in the defence sector. Led by MARTE ARGE, a joint venture between KNDS Deutschland GmbH & Co.KG and Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, the project brings together a comprehensive consortium of 51 entities from 11 EU Member States plus Norway.

Saab AB is proud to be part of the core team managing one of the five technical Work Packages within the MARTE project. The project aims to conduct study and design activities to create a future Main Battle Tank (MBT) system that adequately meets the harmonised needs of the European Member States involved. Integrating innovative and disruptive technologies is key to achieving the project's goals of technological innovation and cross-border collaboration. This approach will lead to the design of a resilient defence system capable of addressing the evolving challenges of modern warfare.

The project, officially launched on 1 December 2024 with a successful Kick-Off Meeting held in Stockholm on 5 and 6 December 2024, has been awarded a grant of approximately €20 million from the European Defence Fund (EDF). This funding is crucial for the development and implementation of the next-generation Main Battle Tank (MBT) system. The consortium receives strong support from 11 Ministries of Defence (MoDs), including those from Germany, Belgium, Spain, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, and Sweden. This backing underscores the strategic importance of the MARTE project in enhancing Europe's defence capabilities.
