Where technology takes flight through teamwork

4 min read

At Saab, innovation is never a solo mission. It’s powered by people working together. Meet Ellen, a Materials Engineer ensuring every Gripen aircraft meets the highest standards of safety and performance. And Andreas, a project manager who leads innovation projects while helping others grow and thrive.

Both began their careers as engineers and followed different paths within Saab. Although their days look a little different, they’re completely in sync about what makes it a great place to work — a blend of curiosity, collaboration, and technical precision, all supported by a culture that lets them make a real impact.

“What truly shapes the great atmosphere and culture here is the sense of community — we’re all here on equal terms, striving to do our best.” – Andreas, Project Manager

“There’s not always an obvious answer, so it involves working with many different specialists across Saab.” – Ellen, Materials Engineer

  • Believes Saab’s culture of trust and flexibility is the foundation for creativity and progress

A day at Saab

On the innovation side, Andreas leads cross-functional projects that explore new ways of working and push the limits of what our technology can achieve. His role is as much about people as it is about progress.

“The most fulfilling part of my job is seeing others take on challenges and grow from them,” he says. “That’s when you know real innovation is happening, when people dare to go beyond what they thought possible.”

Ellen’s work as a Materials Engineer for Gripen combines both precision and creativity. She collaborates with design, production, and environmental teams to make sure every material and surface coating on the Gripen aircraft performs, from strength and corrosion resistance to sustainability.

“What I like most is that there’s always something to solve,” Ellen says. “No two days are the same, and you learn so much by working alongside experts from different fields.”

What it’s like to work here (and why we like it)

When asked what stands out most about working here, both Ellen and Andreas point to the atmosphere; open, genuine, and built on mutual respect.

“We laugh a lot, and there’s a strong sense of camaraderie,” Ellen says. “If someone’s having a tough day, they can be open about it — there’s always support.”

That same openness, Andreas explains, extends throughout the organisation. Curiosity is encouraged, and everyone is willing to share their knowledge.

“No questions are considered dumb, and there’s a shared desire to help one another,” he says. “It creates an environment where you can grow, learn, and genuinely enjoy your work.”

The trust that defines Saab’s culture also makes it easier to balance demanding projects with life beyond work. Flexibility isn’t just a nice perk, it’s part of the everyday mindset.

“Many of us know each other outside of work,” Andreas adds. “It makes collaboration genuine.”

Why our work matters

The purpose behind their work goes far beyond coatings and project plans. It’s about how, together with their teams, they create solutions people can rely on.

And knowing that what they build today helps protect lives in the future.

For Andreas, that sense of impact comes from watching both ideas - and people - grow.

“What we build here matters to those who rely on it,” he says. “And it’s a good feeling to know that what we develop helps others defend their freedom and stay safe.”

Ellen sees that connection every day in her work with Gripen.

“Our goal is making sure people feel safe, and that’s something everyone here contributes to,” she says.
