The role
The Design Approval Engineer (DAE) is a delegated Technical Authority (TA) with responsibility for discharging engineering obligations on behalf of the System Technical Authority (STA). They will independently oversee the engineering activities for allocated subsystems to ensure the delivered subsystems achieve the required integrity, safety and environmental outcomes. Specifically, the DAE will ensure that the relevant subsystem artefacts, engineering CDRLs and services delivered for the combat system's subsystems achieve the standard required for certification.
The DAE will operate within the naval combat systems domain. They will bring extensive engineering experience and expert technical leadership to the program engineering lead team, and will drive high quality culture, continuous improvement and identification of effective solutions to engineering issues.
Further, the successful candidate will:
STA Support:
- Assist the STA in developing and maintaining the engineering and technical authority components of the management system
- Maintain required technical competency standards
- Ensure designs receive appropriate review by suitably qualified and experienced personnel
- Review, approve and release engineering-management plans, procedures, and work-instructions for customer endorsement.
Project Design Oversight:
- Review, approve and release project designs and related artefacts for mandated system reviews and milestone deliveries per the system review plan
- Compile and maintain objective quality evidence to support subsystem design certificates within the delegated certification area authorised by the STA
- Prepare judgement of significance statements in collaboration with Program Engineering Managers.
Engineering Governance and Seaworthiness:
- Independently approve seaworthiness aspects (safety, cyber, fitness-for-purpose) of completed designs
- Present and manage design updates at Steering Groups and other governance forums.
Configuration and Baseline Control:
- Control combat system design baselines (FBL, ABL, and PBL)
- Review and approve delegated elements of the combat system MBSE model.
Technical Plan Approval:
- Approve project technical plans, including deviations from the engineering aspects of the management system
- Other general leadership responsibilities.
Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office and a 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.
About you
Your skills and experience will include:
- Bachelor (or higher) in an engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent professional experience
- Technical leadership and safety oversight on large-scale, complex engineering bids or projects
- Proven ability to engage and manage customer stakeholders effectively
- Collaborating with multinational partners and stakeholders
- Self-verification before releasing any work
- Continuous improvement
- A high level of technical competence that commands respect within the naval combat system domain
- Leading, communicating, influencing and negotiating with stakeholders across a program
- Coaching and mentoring and developing teams to support succession planning goals
- Experienced in Above Water Sensors, Combat Management Systems, VSRD Weapons, Electronic Warfare, Whole of Ship Platform Engineering Software Systems
- Accept responsibility for quality; make quality a visible and integral part of every activity, communicating quality matters proactively
- WHS leadership is defined by setting safe-behaviour standards and embedding WHS into everyday operations
- Ensuring adherence to a WHS management system, risk mitigation risks, and driving continuous improvement.
Applicants will be required to hold an Australian Defence Security Clearance to at least NV1. Information including past and present nationality and citizenship may be requested to check eligibility for access to materials controlled under various export control regimes, including ITAR.
