The role
As part of our Naval Combat Systems group, The Field Service Technical Officer role is responsible for the sustainment of the suite of Saab 9LV Combat System products for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) including the interface of underwater sensors, radar and weapons systems, communications, navigation aids and electronic warfare systems.
Responsible for the upgrade, updating and upkeep of advanced military Combat System equipment onboard Royal Australian Navy ships and support facilities, with support to the Anzac Class (FFH), Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV), Landing Helicopter Docks (LHD), Auxiliary Oiler Replenisher (AOR) and Hobart Class Destroyers (DDG).
The role is accountable for the serviceability, readiness and accuracy of the Combat Systems which will see you operating systems and monitoring performance to identify and correct operational faults. Conduct maintenance tasks, including routine planned maintenance, attending to breakdown maintenance, and implementing corrective repairs.
Further, the successful candidate will:
- Safety: Follow safe systems of work. Be active in maintaining a safe work environment for you and your work colleagues.
- Technical Responsibilities: Undertake and at time coordinate the testing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining and upgrading a wide range of electronic, electrical and electro-mechanical equipment on RAN ships, test sites and facilities including Command and Control, Fire Control Systems and Primary Search Radar.
- Undertake the test, acceptance and set to work of hardware at factory and ship/shore installations including the installation of equipment, connectivity testing, network configuration and commissioning.
- Diagnose and resolve problems related to operating systems, drivers, and applications. Configure LANs, WANs, VPNs and Wi-Fi, as well as diagnosing network problems.
- Undertake routine inspections, condition assessment and monitoring of systems to deliver optimised performance and improvement.
- Undertake technical survey, repairs and investigations on Lowest Replaceable Unit equipment in a workshop facility ensuring adherence to approved work practices with specific responsibility for ESD prevention and electronic equipment handling practices. Identify and fixing issues with physical components like hard drives, memory, power supplies, and circuit boards.
- Prepare closing reports and objective quality evidence such as test reports, test plans, drawing updates for delivery to the customer.
- Have sound skills in fault finding logic, networking fundamentals, PCB repair and installation of electronic equipment. Hold a competent level of competence of Saab Combat System products and/or Defence or civilian radar, navigation, communication or combat systems.
Flexible work arrangements such as 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.
About you
Your education, skills and experience will include:
- Minimum of a Certificate III in Electronics and Communications Engineering (or related UEE Electrotechnology competencies) or higher.
Skills
- Installation, commissioning and maintenance of electronic systems.
- Proficiency in IPC workmanship standards.
- Proficient in the use of PCs and relevant software applications (Microsoft Office Suite etc).
- Working at Heights certified.
- Construction Industry White Card.
Experience
- 3-5 years’ experience in the Defence Force, Defence industry or maritime environment.
- Experience in circuits and wiring fault finding in PC and industrial computing bus systems (cPCI, VME).
- Previous experience in field fault diagnosis and repair of electronic and electrical equipment
As a defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants will be required to hold an Australian Defence Security Clearance preferably to NV1 level or have the ability to gain one. Information including past and present nationality and citizenship may be requested to check eligibility for access to materials controlled under various export control regimes, including ITAR.
