The role
As part of our Chief Engineering – Space Domain, the Space Software Engineer will contribute to the development of Space Domain products that provide frontline situational awareness and decision support capability, built on historic, real-time and predictive data and intelligence. The role is positioned as a member of an agile integrated development team.
As a Space Software Engineer, you will be working on the design, development and testing of space domain mission system products, within the Defence research environment or within the Saab development environment. You will be responsible for the technical delivery of software in areas including user interfaces, data interfaces, and core system functionality and will work closely with the broader engineering team and external stakeholders to deliver to product roadmap outcomes.
Further, the successful candidate will:
- Develop new software components to introduce features, working with existing SDKs and frameworks.
- Maintain and improve existing software components and associated engineering documentation.
- Identify and escalate risks and issues to internal and external stakeholders as appropriate.
- Document software solutions and architectures through design descriptions, diagrams and process flows.
- Perform integration testing of software components and services to verify that software outcomes have been achieved.
- Support the maintenance and expansion of secure automated pipelines to continuously integrate and deploy Space Domain products to customer environment.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office, 9-day fortnight and part time (0.8 FTE minimum) will be considered for this role.
About you
Your education, skills and experience will include:
Essential
- Tertiary qualifications (bachelor’s degree) in a relevant discipline (Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field etc.), and/or equivalent relevant experience (preferably within the defence industry).
- Fluent in at least one of the following programming languages: Java, Javascript, C#.
- Well-versed in object orientated design and programming languages.
- Proficient in applying general-purpose and framework-specific design patterns to address architectural and implementation challenges.
- Demonstrate appreciation of agile methodologies and systems engineering practices and apply them appropriately throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Experienced in the interpretation and application of software standards.
- Apply configuration management principles and use Git to ensure controlled and traceable development of software products.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Development of web applications or other Front End user interface design
- Backend software development technologies – eg, API development, micro-services and containerization.
Desirable
- Experienced with one of the following UI Frameworks: React, Vue, Angular, ASP.NET, MVC.NET.
- Familiar with the design and implementation of relational databases.
- Experienced in the design and implementation or distributed real-time software systems.
- Familiar with development and deployment of Cloud Infrastructure (Azure or AWS).
- Skilled in designing and implementing test automation solutions, including the use of test automation frameworks.
- Capable of developing human-machine interfaces (HMIs) for interactive systems.
- Experience working with Defence and DSTG stakeholders.
- Experience in space domain awareness mission systems.
- Experience with software development in a collaborative product development environment.
- Containerization (ie concepts, Docker, Kubernetes, UI management tools)
- Cloud Technologies
- Demonstrated ability to work closely and effectively with internal and external customers and stakeholders.
Applicants must be Australian citizens and hold or be able to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance preferably to NV1 level.
