The Made in Canada Fighter

The Gripen program will create 6,000 new high paying jobs across Canada per year over the course of a 40 year period. These are direct jobs, relevant to the program and related investments. They also come with the added benefit of intellectual property transfer from Saab, helping to build additional capabilities in Canada’s aerospace industry. Saab’s offer meets Canada’s requirement of 100% guaranteed offsets – the only remaining competitor who has made this commitment.

Gripen will be built, maintained and upgraded in Canada together with our Canadian partners following a contract award. The Gripen for Canada Team, a group of Canadian companies, will support the fighter operations and grow the Canadian aerospace and defence sectors. The Gripen for Canada Team includes IMP Aerospace and Defence, GE, CAE and Arcfield Canada (formerly Peraton Canada).

Saab will also establish a Gripen Centre in Montreal that will employ Canadians to manage and maintain the country’s Gripen fleet as well as ensure Canada’s interoperability requirements. We have also announced that Saab will invest in a Cyber Resilience Centre in Toronto, a Sensor Centre in Vancouver, and an Aerospace R&D Centre in Montreal. These centers will further Canadian innovation in key areas to support economic growth. Learn more about the future Aerospace R&D centre here.
