The art of growing as a person and to contribute to society

6 min read

At the age of 9, Sara decided that she wanted to grow up and save lives. Even back then, she wanted to be a part of a workplace with a mission to contribute to humanity. And now, many years later, with a M.Sc.Eng. degree in chemical biology she is working at Saab where the vision “It’s a human right to feel safe” is a perfect fit for her and her 9-year old dream. And what she’s now realized is that that the opportunities for development within Saab are great.

What makes Sara's job at Saab feel meaningful is to know that she contributes to what Saab stands for and the fact that she is involved in creating a better work environment and culture for the people around her.
"What makes my job feel meaningful is to know that I contribute to what Saab stands for and the fact that I am involved in creating a better work environment and culture for the people around me."

For Sara her job feels the most meaningful when she get to see how the work she is doing contributes to the big picture of Saab, the world and its population. She always tries to see the connection between the tasks she performs and how it has an impact on everyone’s right to feel safe by being able to defend themselves. This drives her to continue to push and develop herself, her colleagues and the processes she works with.

Talent advisory Board - a possibility to make a difference

During her time at Saab, Sara has also been appointed as a Young Talent and become a member of the group Talent Advisory Board (TAB). TAB gives the opportunity to carry out assignments directly from the senior management at the business area Aeronautics within Saab. Sara believes that it is thanks to her work in TAB, she has been given the opportunity to get an outlet for her creativity, meet inspiring people and becoming involved in shaping Saab's future.

"Here at Saab, we have a culture that allows you to develop as a person and take on new roles that you didn't even know existed."

"At Saab, we have a culture that allows you to be creative and to try things outside your own role. You can tell that everyone are involved and want to work on the culture to make it even better – and to challenge it even more to meet today’s demands on for diversity and inclusion. Here at Saab, we have a culture that allows you to develop as a person and take on new roles that you didn't even know existed."

The first assignment for the TAB group was to develop concrete proposals on how Saab can become a more attractive employer, both now and in the future.

"It means a lot to me to inspire people to see Saab as a company that contributes to people's safety"

"It means a lot to me to inspire people to see Saab as a company that contributes to people's safety, and also that it is reflected what a warm culture and lovely people we have here. For me that includes showing how we actively work with diversity in the organisation and making everyone who chooses to work here feel included. Working at Saab you should know that you belong here and that there is a purpose and a good cause to go to work every day."

3 energy sources: Horses, crossfit and Saab

Sara refers to herself as a horse girl and, together with her current and greatest interest; crossfit, horses and exercising have become an important part of her life outside of work.

"Both in training horse and when I practice crossfit, I have to be 100 percent present. This lets me leave my job and everything else circling in my head. The horses have also helped me to become a better leader, to be able to take greater responsibility as well as communicate better, two qualities that I naturally carry with me and that helps me in my daily work.

Sara believes that it is important to find a place and an activity where you can disconnect from everything in order to recharge your batteries. This is something she found important as she kept "pushing her own boundaries" in crossfit together with her friends.

"The job provides an incredible amount of energy but it's important for me to find energy in other places as well."

Endless possibilities

Even though Sara started working at Saab only three years ago, she has had the chance to work in a wide range of areas at Saab. After graduating, she was a quality engineer and later assumed a role as assignment manager for the qualification of materials and processes.

"I would recommend Saab as a workplace for everyone I know! If you show strive and a commitment, you can go a long way and get an incredible amount of personal growth within Saab. There are talent programs and internal education that allows you to constantly learn and develop, and that makes the possibilities here at Saab endless! This makes me constantly feel stimulated and I learn something new every day."

When we talk to Sara, she has recently started as Section Manager for Avionic system and configuration. Although it is still within Saab things feel new and exciting.

"My previous roles at Saab have really helped me to understand what is expected of me and how to work properly."

A normal day at work starts by visiting all colleagues, having a large cup of coffee and then checking in what to do during the day. Sara believes that with her job as an engineer at Saab, no day is the same. Some days are busy with meetings where decisions quickly need to be taken, while other days are more about project managing, planning, resource planning and to create the best possible best conditions for her employees.

"There is not a single day that has been boring since I started at Saab, and I have both our vision and the people I work with to thank for that."
